In 1998, the United States Coast Guard, ordered (50), 87’ Marine Protective Class Cutters to replace an aging fleet of 82’ Point class boats. Before ordering these new vessels, the United States Coast Guard set as a criteria that the new vessels be of a proven design. The new 87’ Coastal Patrol Boat has its roots, in the Stan 2600 design from the Damen Group of the Netherlands and is used by, among others the Hong Kong Police.

The Bollinger Shipyards, Lockport LA, builders of the 87’ Coastal Patrol Boat, reported, in 2009, a total of (75) cutters of the Marine Protective Class had been ordered.

The new design has an innovative rear launch design with attached rigid hull inflatable boat upgraded since the initial inception of this class of cutter, in an effort to increase speed and sea state sustainability for boarding parties and rescue and assistance teams. The stern launching system requires just a single crew member to remain on deck to launch or retrieve the boarding party. The larger pilot house is equipped with an integrated bridge system including electronic chart display coupled with a new surface search radar. The new 87’ vessel is 100% compliant with all current and projected environmental protection laws.

The power plant of two diesel engines, burns approximately 165 gallons of fuel at maximum speed of (65) knots.

There are (5) separate berthing spaces to accommodate a crew of both genders - a standard crew of (10) with a maximum crew of (12).
